Irish Film Trail

From the days of black and white movies Ireland has been used for shooting many famous film and TVIrish Film Trail scenes particularly along the East and South East coast of Ireland. Take the drive from Dublin to Greystones (Father Ted & Angela’s Ashes) to Kilruddery House (Far & Away).

Take time to visit Powerscourt Estate and Gardens www.powerscourt.ie which includes the highest waterfall in Ireland, (Count of Monte Cristo, Excalibur). Heading south through the Sally Gap in the Wicklow Mountains to Kippure (Braveheart, The Devils Own, Dancing at Lughnasa).

Avoca to the east of Hollywood (Michael Collins) driving through the Wicklow Gap past the lead mines (Reign of Fire) to Roundwood and Childer’s Wood (Excalibur) south to Rathdrum (Michael Collins) and on to Avoca (Ballykissangel). Venture further down the coast

Where Wicklow and Dublin Meet

Powerscourt GardensIf you are staying in Dublin City or the Wicklow area, head into the Wicklow Mountains and the pretty village of Enniskerry. From here you can visit Powerscourt Estate and Gardens which includes the highest waterfall in Ireland. Continue the tour via the Sally Gap towards Glendalough, one of the most picturesque glens in County Wicklow with its 6th century monastery of St. Kevin. From Arklow head north to Wicklow and admire the views over the bay.

Just north of Wicklow is the beautiful Mount Usher Gardens open from Spring to Autumn. Drive through the Devils Glen through to Greystones and Bray over looked by Bray Head and the ‘great’ Sugar Loaf mountain which on a clear day can be seen in the distance as you sail into Dublin Bay.

Midlands Circular Tour

Take time away from the N7 dual carriageway and visit Emo House & Gardens with a spectacular drive way up to the main house located within 55 acres of gardens and parkland. The gardens are open all year and the house from June to September, with an excellent Country Fare held over 3 days in May.

Enjoy the CraicPortlaoise town is a traditional market town offering local produce and traditional Irish pubs and a good base to stay while touring this area. Located at Bury Quay, the Tullamore Dew Heritage Centre Co. Offaly is  housed in the original 1897 Bonded Warehouse. The exhibition relates the story of the towns development, focusing on the Grand Canal, Tullamore Dew Whiskey and Irish Mist Liqueur. Visitors can wander through the various recreated working stations that were at the distillery such as malting, bottling or cooperage areas and learn how the whiskey was made. At the end of the tour, visitors can enjoy a complimentary tasting of one of the drinks.

The Clonmacnoise and West Offaly Railway offers a 9km rail trip through Blackwater Bog, near Shannonbridge Co. Offaly on a 3ft narrow gauge railway. While travelling learn about the formation of the peat and the industry that has built up around the bog. There may  also be a chance to stop and try your hand at cutting a piece of bog.
